The global market for Ultrafast Lasers is expected to slump by -8.0% in the year 2020 and thereafter recover and grow to reach US$2.1 billion by the year 2027, trailing a post COVID-19 CAGR of 8.5% over the analysis period 2020 through 2027. One of the biggest advances in the manufacturing is precision manufacturing. The concept has helped revolutionize manufacturing by enabling previously unimagined levels of cost reduction while simultaneously increasing efficiency, tightening tolerances, and providing more quality. The most sophisticated engineering solutions are to design and produce safe and effective fighter aircraft, submarines, bombers, Unmanned Air Vehicle (UAV), Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV), and aircraft carriers, among others. Cutting edge technology including machine tools, robotics and metrology solutions are needed in production lines to manufacture components, sub-assemblies and sub systems use in these vehicles and machines. Precision manufacturing allows manufacturing parts, components and products with impeccable precision and accuracy. This reduces material wastages, brings down overall cost of production, ensures adherence to specifications, and reduces risks of manufacturing flaws and product recalls. In addition, precision manufacturing helps lower prototype costs and decrease design time. New models of products can be drawn and implemented easily and quickly. In the event of design changes at the testing stage, changes to design can be made easily without having to go back to the drawing board each time product functionality hits a bump in the road. In today's world of technological revolution, parts are manufactured in tight design tolerances and surface finishes at nanometer and sub-micrometer levels. In the electronics industry, the miniaturization trend which led to the shrinking in the size of electronic components for operational functionality has also pushed up the pressure on manufacturers for precision. Several technologies have evolved to enable precision manufacturing ranging from CNC machining, metrology software, custom software, engineered tools to laser processing. Over the last decade a newer and more advanced technology evolved to take precision manufacturing to higher grounds. The inherent advantage of laser technology is precision. Laser cutting and machining for instance offers benefits much higher than traditional cutting using dies, punches, and other similar tools. Using an extremely small, powerful light beam laser cutting machines cuts material with extreme precision. Powerful laser lights are capable of melting and evaporating material with unparalleled accuracy, with typical tolerances of 0.003 mm to 0.006 mm. In contrast, a plasma cutter features a tolerance of just about 0.02 mm, and some die cutting tools have tolerances as high as 1-3 millimeters or higher. Laser processing is therefore a major precision machining technology. Types of laser processing systems include laser cutting, laser cleaning, laser engraving/marking; laser sealing, laser welding; laser surface treatment and modification; laser cladding; laser drilling, among others. Laser machining helps process a wide range of materials including different types of metals and plastics and is therefore has widespread applications in myriad types of manufacturing activities. Being extremely gentle, laser processing causes no shock waves and structural damages such as micro cracks and therefore are suitable for thin materials and helps in ensuring material integrity. Benefits of laser processing driving its adoption as a preferred precision machining technology include zero risk of ejected material and debris damaging the surface and reduced need for post-processing; lower risk of damage to delicate parts; clean machining with no thermal fingerprint on the workpiece; zero impact on the material's physical characteristics; consumes less energy even when cutting and machining tough materials like steel and aluminum; faster and more precise cutting; ability to machine complex shapes with precision; ability to cut very small dimension holes with high quality edge detail; less wastages and more productive use of materials. Since lasers generate focused heat only in a small area they leave behind no thermal signatures like warping or distortion. Another benefit of laser cutting and machining is complete elimination of the need to replace or modify tooling as laser cutter does not use any kind of tooling and also does use any cutting surfaces which are prone to wear and tear. Fewer mechanical moving parts of laser tools also reduces maintenance and operations costs. High-powered laser can cut and mold complex parts designs and geometry with unparalleled precision and excellent tolerance.
