The global market for Lightning Protection Technologies is expected to decline by -7.1% in the year 2020 before recovering to reach US$1.1 billion by the year 2027, trailing a post COVID-19 CAGR of 4.8% over the analysis period 2020 through 2027. The global demand for lightning protection technologies depends on growth and expansion of its applications in end-use industries such as commercial, residential, and industrial sectors. The COVID-19 outbreak has affected construction projects with negative implications for the new installation of the lightning protection technologies market. New installation of lightning protection products rely heavily on new construction activity, which is estimated to remain subdued over the short term. Postponements of Infrastructure development projects have come as a heavy blow for building material manufacturers and suppliers. Transport restrictions have additionally played their role in disrupting production and supply of construction materials. Real estate, both commercial & residential, is collapsing under the weight of falling consumer disposable incomes and plummeting business confidence. Lightning protection devices such as lightning arrester rod and lightning conductor which are installed on buildings to protect against voltage surges are therefore feeling the heat of disruptions consuming the construction industry. While the healthcare industry is likely to deliver a decent performance, lack of tax rebates for retrofit installations is expected to reduce investment in retrofit installations in industry and commercial verticals. Lightning strikes hold negative economic implications owing to their impact on facilities and other structures, leading to heavy disruptions and losses. The Earth experiences around 100 lightning strikes per second, which culminates into over eight million strikes per day. The US witnesses around 25 million incidents of lightning strike a year. In addition to holding potential impact on residential, rural and urban areas, lightning strikes expose business and industrial facilities to the risk of deregulation and operational breakdown. The annual loss associated with unplanned downtime for the major businesses in the US has been estimated at $2.5 billion, which is considerably higher than deployment cost of lightning protection systems. The impact of lightning strikes increases sharply when the cost to small- to medium-sized businesses is also included. The overall cost related to lightning strikes to US property and industry is projected to be around 8-10 billion per year. The US economy and industry relies heavily on the electronic and telecommunication infrastructure. However, these digital assets and infrastructure are susceptible to the damage caused by lightning or transient currents. The increasing incident of these strikes along with heavy economic consequences creates the need to properly absorb or control lightning strikes. There are advanced technologies to offer effective protection for facilities and buildings from lightning strikes. The integration of sophisticated technologies for potential equalization, grounding, surge protection, lightning warning and structural lightning protection can reduce the damage and save billions of dollars per year.


Some of the commonly used lightning protection technologies are conventional rods, dissipation away systems and early streamer emissions. Dissipation array systems reduce the natural electric field in a protected area to prevent upward streamer from getting sufficient energy from the storm for connecting with the downward leader. In contrast to early streamer emission and traditional lightning rods, dissipation array systems leverage the charge transfer technology and are known to reduce operating costs. Lightning protection systems have experienced notable uprising since the invention of lightning rods. The combination of structural protection systems with surge suppressors and arresters protects software and electronic systems in a building from lightning surges. Lightning strikes on a building or power line, or associated voltage surge can lead to a fire in electrical service panel boxes and even damage equipment or systems by damaging insulation and microprocessor components. The combination of structural protection or lightning rods and surge protection reduces damage and protects properties. The evolving concept of smart homes where all electronic appliances are connected in a centralized location is paving way for a range of supporting digital technologies and services. As homes and buildings become smarter with incorporation of new connected technologies, monitoring controls and intelligent systems, the need for lightning protection has become more critical to safeguard electrical equipment in these homes. A lightning flash generates about 200 kA of electrical energy, which makes smart buildings more susceptible to threat of fire from a direct strike or electrical surge. When lightning strikes a building, a significant amount of electricity can surge through the metallic cabling that serves the electrical connections including those used for electricity, phone connections, and smart home automation. Although most of these equipment are earthed, they are not protected from lightning strike, as a surge of current can pass through the wiring of a building through multiple electronic systems before being dissipated to a safe point. A transient overvoltage is hence capable of disrupting and damaging multiple electronic systems and connected electrical equipment resulting in huge loss to home owners. With the growth in number of smart homes and automated technologies, and the ensuing increase in risk of unexpected electrical threat due to external surges from lightning strikes, demand for lightning protection in building design process of smart homes is expected to grow in future.
