The COVID-19 pandemic has decimated several industries but bucking the trend is the health, wellbeing and fitness industry. From dietary supplements, functional foods, nutraceuticals, indoorexercisingtow eight management, consumers have stepped up their spending on health related products and services. The stress of navigating through difficult and uncertain times is forcing consumers to focus on personal well-being of mind, body, spirit and beyond. Social, financial, physical, emotional and environmental issues are topping the priority list for consumers. Worries related to finances, childcare, elderly parents, job security, disruption to routine life are all triggers to stress in the current pandemic scenario. Given that stress can weaken the immune system and compromise overall health and wellbeing, consumers are beginning to spend additional time, money and resources on lifestyle changes, routines and food habits to deal with the pandemic. With no clear and effective treatment for COVID-19 available despite global efforts to find a potent drug, natural remedies in the form of immunity boosters and physical fitness are gaining in prominence. A robust immune system plays a key role in tackling unknown pathogens like COVID-19. With no vaccine on cards for another year, the immune systems will need to adapt unaided to fight COVID-19.

While rising focus on healthy diets with disease-preventing, longevity-increasing, and health-promoting functional nutrients has always been a key growth driver, the current pandemic has catalyzed the trend further. This is evident by the fact that health foods which were growing in demand even before the pandemic is now witnessing significantly higher retail sales growth. Supplements that boost Immune health, boost overall wellness and reduce anxiety or stress are recording robust retail gains especially at online pharmacies. Regular exercising, high protein &fiber rich foods are prime among the lifestyle habits popularized to improve the immune health. Although difficult to maintain a healthy lifestyle when confined to the house with limited social contact during a pandemic, consumers have stepped up efforts to remain physically active even when in self-quarantine. Studies have shown that exercise may actually help in reducing the risk of deadly COVID-19 complications, especially those related to respiratory failures triggered by rapid onset of inflammation in the lungs. Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is the cause of death in 5%-20% of patients infected with COVID-19. Protective role of exercise-induced antioxidant enzymes in countering the risk of ARDS is now being highlighted by various studies. The overwhelming proof of evidence is encouraging consumers to adopt home exercises and workouts.

With doctor's offices, health clubs, wellness centers remaining closed, self-assessment healthcare tools are growing in popularity in parallel to home fitness and indoor exercises. A key part of weight management tools, body composition analyzers are vital in tracking the effectiveness of weight gain or weight loss regimes. The market therefore remains relatively shielded as consumers take advanced body composition testing to the comfort of their homes. Among all the various types of healthcare related products, the pandemic especially is pushing up obesity-related health spending as % of total health expenditure. Maintaining balance between lean body mass and body fat is critical for longevity and good health. Presence of excess fat in comparison to lean body mass can lead to obesity and significantly heighten risks of developing diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and other lifestyle diseases. Body fat percentage is the ratio of total fat present in the body to the body weight, while body fat mass represents the weight of fat in the body. Body composition analysis helps clinicians detect altered balance in an individual's body composition, enabling early intervention as well as prevention. Body composition analyzers are widely used to assess the amount of fat, bone and muscle in the body. These devices are used to estimate fat and non-fat mass of the body including analysis of proteins, minerals and water. The process provides precise measurement regarding the body fat in association with lean body mass to help users evaluate the risk linked with high or low level of body fat. These analyzers are commonly used at fitness clubs, hospitals, homes and academic & research centers. Demand for compact and easy to use body composition analyzers are now growing in demand in parallel with healthcare increasingly shifting to consumer homes. The scenario is expected to drive a 5.4% spike in growth in the year 2020, following which the global market will reach a revised size of US$949.4million by the year 2027, trailing a CAGR of 8.3%. Bio-Impedance Analyzers, one of the segments analyzed in the report, is projected to grow at a 9.6% CAGR to reach US$352million by the end of the analysis period.
