Governments worldwide are prioritizing food security goals, making global governance on food security an important step forward in taking collective global action. Types of autonomous farm equipment include driverless tractors, agricultural drones and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), agricultural robots, autonomous harvesters, etc. Autonomous farm equipment ensures more profitable use of seeds, fertilizer, irrigation water and fuel consumption, among others. Key distinguishing features of autonomous farm equipment when compared traditional mechanized farm equipment and implements include use of GPS, satellite imagery and machine vision for navigation; integration of smart sensors for context and situational awareness; use of electronic hardware for automation; use of artificial intelligence (AI) for predictive reasoning and automated decisions. In other words, AI in autonomous vehicles will be capable of identify diseases in plants, recognize crop diseases, pest damage, selectively exclude weeds during harvesting and crop picking, among others. In conclusion, food security concerns have pushed innovative technologies into the field of agriculture, opening up a landmine of opportunities for automation in agriculture. Tractors are widely used for plowing agricultural land, and are mainly human-driven. However, the concept of autonomous tractors is expected to minimize human intervention and improve productivity. Tractors with location tracking and AI are capable of determining their path and push efficiency. Companies are working of advanced autonomous tractors with GPS systems, cameras and lasers that can prepare the ground, sow seeds and maintain crops.


The use of AI is anticipated to prepare these tractors for real conditions such as irregular pathways and obstacles. In addition to minimizing dependence of farm labor, the technology is likely to improve yields. Majority of completely autonomous tractors utilize in-built lasers, controllers, and 150 MHz radios for navigating through agricultural fields. The advanced vehicle features Controller Area Network (CAN bus), GPS positioning, radio feedback, and automation software. An onboard computer as well as retrofit radio receiver translates multiples commands received from various remote command stations. This assists autonomous tractors in effectively performing navigation, acceleration, as well as braking functions. Integration of advanced Light Detection and Ranging (lidar) technologies significantly enhances capabilities of fully autonomous tractors in easily identifying unforeseen obstacles. In contrast to fully autonomy, supervised autonomy utilizes vehicle to vehicle communication technology. Under this mechanism, leading tractor utilizes wireless technology for determining direction and speed of other tractors. Robot tractors are being increasingly adopted to meet the rising demand for food as well as other agricultural commodities from the world's growing population. Automated tractors have the potential to bring down labor cost and boost farm productivity. Growth in the adoption of autonomous tractors is also being driven by shortage of agricultural labor and advancing ages of farmers. Autonomous tractors are extremely reliable and capable of working round-the-clock. These tractors would aid in improving farmers' accuracy and support crop preservation. Also called autonomous vehicles, these robot tractors are capable of performing tasks such as tilling, weeding and seeding. Further, operations of the tractors can be monitored and controlled by farmers from a remote location using mobile devices like a smartphone or a tablet. With the aid of sensors, Internet connectivity and GPS capabilities, these robots are able to navigate as well as share data with farmers as well as other equipment.
