Such computers used to be referred to as PC clones, or IBM clones. They duplicate almost exactly all the significant features of the PC architecture, facilitated by IBM's choice of commodity hardware components and various manufacturers' ability to reverse engineer the BIOS firmware using a "clean room design" technique. Columbia Data Products built the first clone of the IBM personal computer by a clean room implementation of its BIOS.Early IBM PC compatibles used the same computer bus as the original PC and AT models. The IBM AT compatible bus was later named the Industry Standard Architecture (ISA) bus by manufacturers of compatible computers. The term "IBM PC compatible" is now a historical description only, since IBM has ended its personal computer sales. Descendants of the IBM PC compatibles comprise the majority of personal computers on the market presently with the dominant operating system being Microsoft Windows, although interoperability with the bus structure and peripherals of the original PC architecture may be limited or non-existent. Some computers ran MS-DOS but had enough hardware differences that IBM compatible software could not be used; examples include slight differences in the memory map, serial ports or video hardware. Only the Macintosh kept significant market share without compatibility with the IBM PC.

How Is IBM Even Still Around?
MY SILO
DESCRIPTION:
I’m sure you’ve all heard about IBM. They’re one of the pioneers of the PC industry, but nowadays, virtually no one uses IBM computers. Yet, IBM is still one of the largest companies in the world with a market cap of over $100 billion, so how does IBM even make money? Well, throughout IBM’s history, they were almost always a B2B company as opposed to a consumer brand. This is quite ironic given that they’re most well known for their PCs in the 1980s, but this was actually the exception for IBM, not the norm. After the dot-com bubble burst, IBM sold off its PC division to Lenovo and they started focusing on their B2B business once again. This consisted of producing server racks, networks, databases, and setting up cloud infrastructure. All of these background functions allowed IBM to rise to prominence once again, but with the rise of competition within these markets, IBM is struggling once again. Their revenues have nearly halved within the past 10 years and it’s not clear if they can compete against the juggernauts like Amazon and Microsoft. This video explains the rise, fall, rise again, and fall again of IBM. (IBM-PC DOS) Round 42 - Elven Software / Mike Pooler 1986 - COMPLETE AFTER ~ 42 years!
MY SILO
DESCRIPTION:
Throwback Thursday way back to 1986! Say hi to CGA! Update! I finally beat this game. So glad to finally close this chapter of my life. Complete after ~40 years. Back when computers were very limited in color, and pixels are huge, my brothers I often play Round 42. 42 rounds of pixelated alien invaderesque fun! On our IBM PC-XT, with 4 color CGA monitor, most of the games are 4 colors: Black White, and either ugly red and green, or cyan and white. Somehow, this game got all of these colors! The game was hard, and the final enemy of each round moves ridiculously fast. Then we found that F2 fires the zapper weapon :P

IBM 5153 CGA Monitor Simple Recap
MY SILO
DESCRIPTION:
A "spurt" sound isn't something you ever want to hear from your monitor... I knew I wasn't going to get away with leaving it shifting between blue and red for long, but I didn't think it would be this short. If I had seen the cap on the connector board for the CRT initially then I wouldn't have had to take the whole thing apart. But I kind of wanted to get an overview of what was going on inside anyway so I don't mind the extra work having been put in. But if yours blows a color cap you can easily avoid the most difficult part of removing the tube. I'm happy with how this turned out. I will be getting better capacitors later for it, but it isn't a rush. I think I made all the colors a bit dim on the adjustment on the back of the tube. That's probably why it seemed so much darker afterwards. Really, I should have done the calibrations at about 75% brightness. Oh well, it's not too difficult to get to that so I can always fix it later. Digital öppen gästföreläsning om AI med Patrick Couch, IBM
MY SILO
DESCRIPTION:
Välkommen att delta på en öppen gästföreläsning om AI: "Language, Thinking and the Alchemy of Learning Machines: An introduction to the possibilities & challenges with Artificial Intelligence" med Patrick Couch , Business Developer focused on Artificial Intelligence & Cognitive Technologies IBM. "Today, we live in a world which is in many regards digital first. Even seemingly non-digital events and phenomena such as the Corona pandemic, the US election and the democracy movement in Hong Kong are defined, understood and judged digitally first and only in an analog way secondly. Data and algorithms have come to inhabit a central place in our world and we now very much live in a world determined by the successes and failures of our technologies to understand us humans. Our social media feeds, our news feeds, our financial credibility, our entertainment, our shopping, our dating are all facilitated by data crunching algorithms doing their best to please. Obviously, this makes for great possibilities but also poses significant challenges. In this digitally defined world stands the developer, who like an alchemist conjures up new digital vistas for the rest of us to enter into, revel in and be challenged by. In the light of this, I will introduce the topic of artificial intelligence and the need to adress it intelligently."
