You would not believe how much focus it requires because in those games you're playing in real time against just one other person usually and the tiniest mistake can cost you a lot of prize money.” “It's always been go go, but I'm pretty good at reflecting back. I think it's really important for you to just not lose yourself in that process and to reflect on what it is you're doing, because your goals will change quite a bit throughout your life. And if you're not paying attention to that, I think you can get kind of lost in that rat race of you're just chasing something that never ends.” “These farms that reduce 90% to 95% of water, they will be encouraged and incentivized in ways that we can't think of right now because we just don't have a choice. Currently, about 25% of all the people on the planet already don't have access to clean drinking water. 25% is staggering. And that's getting worse and worse. There's over 1.5 million people a year that die just due to lack of water intake every year on the planet. So these problems are huge and they're only getting bigger.” “You have companies like Unfold and some of these newer ones that do seed genetics, that are working with seeds to make them have a better taste profile, a better crunch profile, better flavor, more nutrients.” Resources Mentioned Eric’s LinkedIn – https://www.linkedin.com/in/eric-levesque-a03a33163/?originalSubdomain=ca (https://www.linkedin.com/in/eric-levesque-a03a33163/?originalSubdomain=ca) Eric’s Email – a href="mailto:eric.levesque@cultivatd.com"... But I am keen to see people actually socially get back together as soon as it’s safe.” (https://ctt.ac/E04Cs)(08:16) “I think if people put their hand on their hearts and were honest with you in this sector, they would probably admit that once you’ve cracked the lighting, the power, the automation and handling, and the irrigation, the thing that is left on the table that is the toughest nut to crack is around the area of ventilation.” (https://ctt.ac/E9fzy) (11:14) “And I have to say we also borrowed a couple of people’s garages. A couple of guys did some amazing work from home. I’d love to think of this as the AgriTech Garage Band.” (https://ctt.ac/Ll3aF)(13:47) “You know from our last conversation that we’ve made this promise to the market that we will never grow crops for commercial sale. We’ll just give you a better set of tools.” (https://ctt.ac/e2bJl) (19:52) “I think that governments have to make a choice between a societal focus or an economic focus and one or the other is going to suffer…I just hope that humanity comes to the fore because, at the end of the day, it’s people that make things happen. DESCRIPTION:

Episode Summary: Join Harry Duran, host of Vertical Farming Podcast, as he welcomes to the show Christine Zimmermann-Loessl, Chairwoman at Association for Vertical Farming. Association for Vertical Farming (AVF for short) is an internationally active nonprofit organization of individuals, companies, research institutions and universities focusing on leading and advancing the sustainable growth and development of the vertical farming movement. Today, Harry and Christine talk about how Christine’s entrepreneurial spirit and natural curiosity led her from studying philosophy and political science to heading one of the largest vertical farming advocate organizations. Christine speaks to the need for all companies in the vertical farming industry to work together to combat issues like overpopulation, climate change and other existential planetary crises facing our world. Finally, Christine and Harry talk about the critical role technology continues to play in our world and our future as well as the importance of remembering that we are all part of nature. It is at this intersection of technology and nature that vertical farming can play a saving role. Episodes Sponsor: Global Vertical Farming Show – https://verticalfarmingshow.com/ (https://verticalfarmingshow.com/) Cultivatd – https://cultivatd.com/ (https://cultivatd.com/) What We Covered: 03:41 – Harry welcomes to the show Christine Zimmermann-Loessl who shares the origins of her entrepreneurial spirit, her background in philosophy and political science, and her goals to understand and positively impact the world 10:26 – An early passion for Chinese medicine 17:08 – The origin story of Association for Vertical Farming and early challenges faced 24:29 – The evolution of Christine’s role at AVF and what she’s observed about competitors and the overall industry 30:00 – Relationship-building in the vertical farming space and growing AVF through partnerships 40:53 – Christine makes a specific ask of the audience 45:56 – Harry thanks Christine for joining the show and reiterates where listeners can go to learn more about AVF and connect with Christine Tweetable Quotes: “My father was an entrepreneur, so I grew up with that spirit of being independent and working in the framework that is set by myself and not by somebody else. I could never imagine myself in an office job from nine to five.” (08:20) (Christine) “Now, with vertical farming, all of that comes together for me with technology and biology. The marriage of these two important developments in our history, I think, is a really decisive transformation for us.” (14:57) (Christine) “The mandate [of Association of Vertical Farming] clearly was to raise awareness and build a collaboration and cooperation platform where the few people or institutions who were active in that field had a place together to exchange and grow organically from there.” (20:41) (Christine) “In the beginning, as a newcomer into that field with a very different background in philosophy and political science and not agriculture, I really played the role of organization setup for the legal and administrative things. There were people in the front representing and knowing much more than me about that and I was really more in the back than I am now. That totally changed, but I really had to grow into that role and into the field to really understand.” (24:36) (Christine) “Technology is important, but please never forget that we are part of nature. Vertical farming can play a role in freeing land giving back to nature and not using more and more land. That is what my understanding is.” (40:21)... Episode 1: Best-Practices for Vertical Farming Systems with Jim Pantaleo
LOW OKAY GOOD GREAT

MY SILO

DESCRIPTION:

Join vertical farming expert Jim Pantaleo and the GroAdvisor team as they discuss best practices for planning and building a commercial vertical farm in 2020. Vertical farming is the practice of growing crops in vertically stacked layers by incorporating controlled-environment agriculture equipment to optimize plant growth. Tune in to learn about: - Reliable year-round production - How to remain unaffected by weather - Better space utilization - Minimizing water usage - Building an environmentally-friendly business - Ridding chemicals and pesticides - Reducing transportation costs - Improving energy efficiency and more Transcription: Brandon: Hello, growers. Thanks for joining us today for the Greenhouse and Indoor Cultivation podcast. Today we have Jim Pantaleo, indoor vertical farm operator, an adviser speaking with us about best practices for vertical farming systems. So, Jim, thanks for joining us here today. You have quite an extensive resume. Why don't you introduce yourself to our listeners? Jim: Thanks, Brandon. I'm Jim Pantaleo. And for the last six years, I've been involved in indoor vertical farming, primarily indoor vertical farming. So growing food indoors, using only LED lights as photosynthesis. I've had a number of different roles in the industry over the last six years. Everything from, you know, writer, speaker to farm operator to conference chairman of Indoor Ag-Con, which is sort of the de facto gathering place for indoor vertical farming. Prior to that, I spent 20 years in software licensing. Half of that was Hewlett Packard. So I was a technology guy. And it's been a journey. And I am looking forward to chatting with you today and sharing that journey with you and hopefully inspiring and helping other people that are listening to either make a change from what they're doing now to absolutely getting involved in indoor vertical farming in terms of, you know, a career move. So it's important and I'm happy to be with you guys today. So thank you. Brandon: Yeah. Thank you, Jeff. So let's just get right in here. You know why you're so passionate about the indoor farming industry and you came from technology for 20 years. You say you want to create positive change in the world. You see vertical farming as that future. What do you envision for the future of vertical farming? And why is this such an influential program, and industry right now? Jim: So, as I've always said, when I started in this industry, the data scared me. Jim: And when I say scared, I mean at a like a visceral level, when you think about the data. And so the data is, and when we talk about indoor vertical farming, everybody sort of sings from the same hymnal, is that there are seven billion people on the planet today. By 2050 and another 30 years, there'll be another three billion. So that will top out at about 10 billion. And then here's the scary part in that 70 percent of all arable farmland on the planet today is gone, unavailable, either built over or simply not there. 70 plus percent of all available potable water goes toward - potable, maybe that's not the right word - but water goes towards agriculture. In 2050, upwards of 80 percent of the human populations will live in urban areas. And then you pile in all the stuff that we've just talked about with a supply chain, food miles, you know, over usage of pesticides. Well, again, lack of water resources, all of those scary kind of, you know, areas of our future that sort of drove me into understanding how I could help. And how I could help is knowing that indoor vertical farming will never be an answer to current modern agriculture or large scale corporate farming, if you will. But we could get to a point where we would be able to supplement modern large scale farming. And when you look at what's happening over the last six months with COVID And you think about supply chain constraints and you think about food security and insecurity, it just all makes sense. But we're at the very beginning of it. I know that. And we've got a long time to go until it's proven. Make it real in terms of, again, that supplement to large scale agriculture. But I got into this, you guys, by my fear; essentially, I was afraid. I was afraid for myself and I was afraid for my children. Yeah, especially during COVID-19. And the era that we're living in, it really does create the climate where vertical farming is a great solution for saving some of the supply chain, bringing produce closer to the neighborhoods through which they're served. When a lot of people think of vertical farming, they think there's so much infrastructure that goes into it. How could that make sense over outdoor farming? But they don't realize all the infrastructure that goes into delivering the produce. And it's massive as well. Will: Right. I think there's really no no doubt in my mind that vertical farms are really critical to the future.

Challenges in Vertical Farming and Controlled Environments Agriculture

MY SILO

DESCRIPTION:

Presented on November 14, 2013, by Michael Hoadley - Founder of Fewzion, a Chicago firm that helps develop sustainable agriculture projects Abstract: Rising awareness of natural resource issues surrounding the Food/Energy/Water Nexus have intersected with a growing understanding of the relationship between agriculture and healthcare. Combined with the global macroeconomic trend toward urbanization, a great deal of interest has developed in controlled environment high density urban agriculture as a way to address a myriad of concerns. Given the historical predisposition to think of agriculture as purely a creature of rural culture, the over-zealous nature of policy makers to see urban agriculture as a panacea for a range of social ills, and the velocity and newness of the sector, it is important to choose language and frame the discussion in the context of economically self-sustainable models, free of dependence on policy subsidy & philanthropy. This talk discussed challenges in vertical farming, the state of play in the industry, and the speakers thoughts on trajectory of this emerging asset class of real estate and sub sector of agribusiness. Vertical Farming Explained, with Dickson Despommier Watch the newest video from Big Think: https://bigth.ink/NewVideo Join Big Think Edge for exclusive videos: https://bigth.ink/Edge ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dickson Despommier on how vertical farming can help us meet the challenges of feeding a growing global population. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DICKSON DESPOMMIER: I am a microbiologist/ecologist by training, and for 27 years I conducted laboratory-based research on molecular aspects of intracellular parasitism funded by NIH. I also teach courses in the medical school and in our school of public health (e.g., Parasitic Diseases; Medical Ecology; Ecology 101). Many of them deal with parasitism and its effects on large segments of the poor that live in the tropics. Controlling soil-based transmission cycles of helminthes that cause significant health problems throughout the world is of prime importance to me. I left the lab in favor of working on more globally relevant projects that address some these important problems. Since it is generally agreed agriculture is solely responsible for so much environmental disturbance and serves as the interface for the transmission of geohelminths, one area of focus of mine has been on how to raise food without further encroachment into natural ecosystems. I have established The Vertical Farm as a theoretical construct to look at the possibility of agricultural sustainability within cities. The idea grew out of a class project to measure the effects of rooftop gardening in New York City on reducing the dome of heat that develops over us each year. From that original idea, I expanded the concept to include urban agriculture and finally to multi-story indoor farming. I have given this project to my students in my course, "Medical Ecology." ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRANSCRIPT: Dickson Despommier: As of this moment WHO and the population counsel estimate that about 50 percent of us live in cities. And the other half, of course, lives somewhere else. The other thing we can learn from NASA of all places is how much land those seven billion people, half urban, half rural, actually need to produce their food every year. And it turns out to be a size of South America. So the size of South America in land mass is used just to grow our crops that we plant and harvest. I’m not talking about the herbivores like the cows and the goats and the sheep. So when you think about how much food is consumed by cities, let’s say half, it takes half of the size of South America just to produce it. Now if the human population continues to increase, which we expect it will – so over the next 40 years you might have three billion more people to feed. And you look around for the land where that’s gonna come from in terms of traditional farms and you don’t find it. It isn’t there. So the biggest problem facing us as a global species is where will the food for the next three billion people come from? So it could from someplace other than a traditional farm and the question is, could vertical farming solve that problem. So by vertical farming and a vertical farm I mean any building that grows food inside of it or in which you grow food which is taller than a single story. There are many examples of vertical farms out there which are not traditionally thought of as towering gardens of Eden so to speak as the images on Google might suggest from some of the planners and designers that have submitted their own visions of what they think a vertical farm should look like. Most of those would satisfy the cover of any science fiction magazine I could think of and attract a lot of attention and get people to ask, well, what is that building and what is it doing? But we’re not pretty close to seeing those yet. I think those are gonna be expensive and they’re gonna take a lot of rethinking with regards to urban planning. But we don’t have to do that in order to have vertical farms already. There’s a vertical farm in Singapore. It’s a brand new building. It looks like a greenhouse from the outside, but it’s four stories tall. But it’s a clever design. It uses traditional growing systems though. It uses soil based potted plants on a series of conveyor belts which migrates the plants by gravity – some kind of a grandfather clock like apparatus which actually moves this conveyor belt of plants near the windows maybe once or twice an hour so that every plant gets the same amount of sunlight during the day at least. Because it rains every day there’s certainly no shortage of water for these plants either, and [they] use traditional fertilizer. And the guy has moved from a 2,000 square foot operation to a 20,000 square foot... Read the full transcript at https://bigthink.com/videos/vertical-farming-explained-with-dickson-despommier

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. was the first of a series of ongoing lawsuits between Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics regarding the design of smartphones and tablet computers; between them, the companies made more than half of smartphones sold worldwide as of July 2012. In the spring of 2011, Apple began litigating against Samsung in patent infringement suits, while Apple and Motorola Mobility were already engaged in a patent war on several fronts. Apple's multinational litigation over technology patents became known as part of the mobile device "smartphone patent wars": extensive litigation in fierce competition in the global market for consumer mobile communications. By August 2011, Apple and Samsung were litigating 19 ongoing cases in nine countries; by October, the legal disputes expanded to ten countries. By July 2012, the two companies were still embroiled in more than 50 lawsuits around the globe, with billions of dollars in damages claimed between them. While Apple won a ruling in its favor in the U.S., Samsung won rulings in South Korea, Japan, and the UK. On June 4, 2013, Samsung won a limited ban from the U.S. International Trade Commission on sales of certain Apple products after the commission found Apple had violated a Samsung patent, but this was vetoed by U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman. On December 6, 2016, the United States Supreme Court decided 8-0 to reverse the decision from the first trial that awarded nearly $400 million to Apple and returned the case to Federal Circuit court to define the appropriate legal standard "article of manufacture" because it is not the smartphone itself but could be just the case and screen to which the design patents relate.
