#electricbike #ebike Are unsafe batteries going to kill the eBike industry? Is your eBike battery actually safe? Did you know that 90% of the products that are on the market in the U.S. are untested? I’ve kind of been tip-toeing around this topic, but the realist is, this is impacting me, my customers, and people’s ability to live safely. Not going to call any companies out, but this is a serious issue and more people need to be aware of it. I’m seeing this thing that I put blood, sweat, and tears into crumble before my eyes because companies are trying to cut corners. I could have made a lot more $ by now by selling products that people ask for. We’ve dropped a lot of companies in the past, and these companies are relatively popular, could be selling them, but I’m not going to put my name on that. Not only does the region have some of the highest bike ridership in the nation but the Oregon bike manufacturing industry is quickly growing as well. Oregon’s electric bike (e-bike) market is also growing, but little data are available on the potential market and e-bike user behavior and interest. Only a limited amount of research has explored the potential new market segments for e-bikes and the economic, operational, safety, and transportation issues surrounding e-bikes in the United States. This webinar will present findings from a research project evaluating e-bike use at three Kaiser Permanente employment centers in the Portland region. The project's primary goal was to test user acceptance of electric-assist folding bicycles as a commuting solution. Dr Jan Börner was inaugurated as a Robert Bosch Junior Professor at the University of Bonn yesterday, March 22, 2012. He is going to start his five-year research on the sustainable use of tropical rain forests in Brazil at ZEF in August 2012. The Robert Bosch Foundation has been awarding Junior Professorships for "Sustainable Use of Natural Resources" to young and excellent researchers since 2008. Candidates have to focus on issues relating to the interaction of natural processes and human interventions in nature and the environment. Jan Börner is 37 years of age, has studied environmental and resources economics in Berlin ad Minnesota. He was a doctoral student at ZEF and received his doctoral degree from the Faculty of Agriculture of Bonn University in 2006. As a Postdoc he has worked in Munich and Brazil. One of the speakers at the official inauguration at ZEF was Dr Heiner Geißler, retired Minister of State in Germany. He held the key note address on the role the market plays in sustainable human development.

As Germany, Europe, and the U.S. plan and implement solutions for addressing the climate crisis, the developing world, particularly Africa, requires investments to circumvent the externalities of climate change including hunger and poverty. Without significant food system changes, 78 million people could fall into food insecurity – over half of those in Africa. Agricultural solutions include drought-tolerant and micronutrient-rich seeds developed through advanced plant breeding. Many Germans disagree, arguing that the answer is more organic agriculture and food-loss reduction. How can we make a just transition into a food-secure and climate-neutral world possible? And which “whole of food system” answers are required beyond agricultural solutions? Talk title: Bridging domain gaps in lidar perception Presenter: Claudius Glaeser (Robert Bosch GmbH) Recorded on Sunday, June 5, 2022, in Aachen, Germany. The 3rd workshop on Unsupervised Learning for Automated Driving (ULAD) at the IEEE Intelligent Vehicles Symposium 2022. http://intelligent-vehicles.org/ulad-2022/ Abstract. To make autonomous driving a reality, autonomous vehicles will have to work robustly in the diverse and constantly changing open world in which we live. However, it is not technically feasible to collect and annotate training datasets which accurately represent this open-world domain. Therefore, we must find ways to deal with domain gaps due to changing weather conditions, updates in sensor hardware, different geographical locations and so on. In this presentation, we demonstrate how to bridge domain gaps between high-resolution and low-resolution lidar sensors and good and bad weather conditions using three different domain adaptation approaches. We show that both unsupervised and self-supervised domain adaptation approaches operating on the feature level or data level are effective at bridging domain gaps. Dr. Claudius Glaeser leads a research group on perception for automated driving at Bosch Research in Renningen, Germany. He received his PhD degree in computer science from Bielefeld University, Germany, in 2012. From 2006 he was a Research Scientist with the Honda Research Institute Europe GmbH, Offenbach/Main, Germany, working in the fields of speech processing and language understanding for humanoid robots. In 2011, he joined Robert Bosch GmbH, where he developed perception algorithms for various driver assistance and highly automated driving functions. His research interests include multimodal perception and data fusion for autonomous systems.
