In the midwest, we don't shop at Kroger, like the sign says. We shop at Krogers. With an "s." And we don't call this Meijer. We call it Meijer's. I've even heard this called K-Marts. And of course Walmarts. The late, great Montgomery Ward we called Wards, of course. And even THEY called it Wards, being from the midwest themselves. Chicago, to be exact. The same hometown as Sears Roebuck. Yes, they call themselves Wards on the battery label of the radio I'm going to show you today. But there was a name by which they were commonly and affectionately known that they would NEVER call themselves. Do you remember it? The Wards store brand for electronics was Airline. They began putting this name on radios way back in the 1920s. It's hard to think of it, but "Airline" was a pretty hi-tech word back then. They contracted with American radio makers for years to build versions of those maker's radios to be branded Airline and sold in Wards stores and in the popular Wards catalog. Right into the transistor era, they were still offering American-made radios. In this catalog we see GE's first transistor radio, and also the first Airline-branded transistor radio, this horizontal model we also see variants of branded as Raytheon, Truetone, Symphonic, and Hallicrafters. And this is the Spring and Summer issue of the 1959 Wards catalog. It has several transistor radios, mostly large ones, and all American-made. By the middle of that year, in the Fall-Winter 1959 catalog, Wards introduced this--and began their--what we now call "offshoring" of radio production to Japan. They contracted with Hayakawa Electric there, also known as Sharp, producing this Airline 1131 model--the first Japanese-made Airline. There was some push-back from consumers about this offshoring, even then. And so we see this label, on which Wards attempts to address quality concerns: "This imported product inspected and tested by one of our finest radio factories in the United States to meet our most rigid standards of quality." I don't know what "radio factory" could possibly mean because Wards didn't own any radio factories, so far as I know. And what radio factory would approve of something somebody else made? Not likely. While Wards dubiously addresses the quality concerns of offshoring, other brands addressed labor concerns. The last of the American-made Zenith shirt-pocket transistor radios bore stickers claiming they were "Quality-built in America by highly skilled, well-paid American workers." And Sylvania had Uncle Sam proclaim on their radios that they were "Made in America by Americans." The American consumer gave a giant collective yawn to that--and to Wards's concerns about quality--and just did what they have always done. They bought the bargain. The inexpensive foreign-made transistor radio was irresistable and so that's what Americans bought. Appeals to American nationalism, or even to American collective self-interest failed, as did shaming people to buy domestically-produced items for the sake of their neighbors's jobs. America doesn't do "collective" very well. If it did, the biggest-selling car brand in America would still be Chevrolet--or at least American. Even today, people rail about how everything seems to be made in China. Yet when you go to America's number one dispensary of Chinese goods--WalMart, uh, Walmarts--you see these very same people standing in line to buy more of it. As you can see, this radio is a beauty. Sharp made variants of this radio for several others too, and we see those variants branded as Seminole, Belvedere, Invicta, this wonderful Vanguard, and others. Sharp also issued some attractive variants of this radio under their own name. All these variants had some of the most beautiful underpainted dial areas ever made. In keeping with Wards' somewhat subdued, midwestern values, the Airline versions like the one we are looking at today were not among the most decorative. Just rather simple, actually, but beautiful and with an elegance that lets the depth of the underpainted panel glow without embellishment. The diagonal front design is picked up in the dial window and both take their cue from the slant of the Airline logo itself. This yields the kind of styling we used to call "smart." Very nice. The first Airline transistor radio made in Japan: Available from Montgomery Ward through their catalog or at their stores. Now, what was that we used to call Montgomery Ward? Oh yeah. Let's go over to the mall OK? I want to look at transistor radios. I hear they have a nice Airline model at Monkey Wards.

Our keynote speaker is Davie Philip - a Scottish activist who's been advocating for sustainable community in Ireland for over 20 years. He hosts events and facilitates groups - working on collaborative approaches to help their localities flourish - through Cultivate, the trading name of the Sustainable Ireland Cooperative Society he co-founded in 2000. Davie - based at WeCreate, an ecosystem of innovation in Cloughjordan Ecovillage - has served on the Council of ECOLISE, the European network for community-led initiatives on climate change and sustainability for 4 years. He was elected as an ECOLISE co-president - along with Francesca Whitlock of Global Ecovillage Network (GEN) Europe - in 2019. Yale Zhang is the founder of hardware start-up Safe Heart, which develops innovative wellness applications, hardware, and accessories. Their flagship product iOximeter is the first pulse oximeter to work on Android and iOS platforms, and a recent finalist on the Engadget Insert Coin competition. The iOximeter is a vital signs monitoring tool for smart phones. It is powered through the phone audio jack. Current features of the app include measurements of the oxygen saturation and heart rate, recording, and alarm functionality. Presentation will go over the conception, research, development, and commercialization of the iOximeter product. Future functionality road map will be revealed. A Q&A session will be held afterwards. The presentation will conclude with a live demo and a device giveaway.

The insight into these transportation entities allowed Yale to leave and in 2007 start Clinical Guard, his first product distribution company, in medical supplies. The company has grown from an initial annual revenue of $400K to now $3M. Later, he started a medical device innovations company, Safe Heart USA, Inc, focused on creating vital signs monitoring hardware that works in coordination with smartphones running Android and iOS. As the CEO of Safe Heart, Yale has overseen the successful commercialization of research from Oxford University, Emory University, the successful raising of grants from the Atlantic Pediatric Device Consortium, and finally, in raising capital to initially fund a newly emerging business venture. Although Yale has achieved a certain level of success with his involvement in medical devices, his primary passion has always been transportation systems, specifically autonomous vehicles. Yale believes that ongoing technology research by many private and public companies will lead to car ownership reduction as vehicles become autonomous. When that happens, extraordinary opportunities arise for people to share vehicles. He joins SPLT with the intent to help change the behavior of people so that they are comfortable with sharing rides with other people so that everyone will be ready when the autonomous vehicle economy arrives.
