2022 Danaher GenMed Summit: Convergent Innovation in Genomic Medicines by George Church, Ph.D.
LOW OKAY GOOD GREAT

MY SILO

DESCRIPTION:

“Convergence” involves combining technological and social innovation in ways that guide divergent, out-of-the-box ideas into daily life. Ideally, this convergence will create solutions that improve health care, while reducing costs and social inequities. Instead of sequencing only the 1% coding regions of the human genome, we can do so much more thanks to engineered, 20-million-fold improvements in the cost and quality of sequencing equipment. Instead of coarse tissue sampling, we now perform single-cell profiling and sophisticated molecular imaging. Rather than DNA editing by hatchet, we’re now able to make precise changes at multiple genetic sites, enabling complex gene and cell therapies. This is just the beginning: The future of medicine will bring even more convergent innovations that will revolutionize health care.

Automation and Utopia, with John Danaher

MY SILO

DESCRIPTION:

Human obsolescence is imminent. This trend toward increased obsolescence is likely to continue in the future, and we must do our best to prepare ourselves and our societies for this reality. Far from being a cause for despair, this is in fact an opportunity for optimism. Harnessed in the right way, the technology that hastens our obsolescence can open us up to new utopian possibilities and enable heightened forms of human flourishing. These are some of the claims advanced in the recent new book by John Danaher, "Automation and Utopia: Human Flourishing in a World Without Work". John spoke about these themes at a London Futurists event on 11th January 2020. Propositions covered in the talk include: 1. The automation of work is both possible and desirable; 2. The automation of life more generally poses a threat to human well-being, meaning, and flourishing; 3. One way to mitigate this threat would be to build a Cyborg Utopia, but it’s not clear how practical or utopian this would really be; 4. Another way to mitigate this threat would be to build a Virtual Utopia: instead of integrating ourselves with machines in an effort to maintain our relevance in the “real” world, we could retreat to “virtual” worlds that are created and sustained by the technological infrastructure that we have built. The meeting was chaired by David Wood. The camera was operated by Kiran Manam. Sound quality is variable in places, especially when members of the audience were speaking, but it's well worth listening to what was said! Algocracy - Opportunities and Risks with John Danaher - Part 1

MY SILO

DESCRIPTION:

Algocracy - Opportunities and Risks of Automation in Political & Legal Systems with John Danaher - Part 1 Also see part 2: https://youtu.be/kJrN4E4N5EQ The term 'algocracy' can be used to describe decision-making systems in which computer-coded algorithms structure and constrain the way in which human beings interact with these decision-making processes (see, generally, Aneesh 2009). Though algorithms have been around long before computers - though used to involve in far more human input than they do today. central thesis: That the increase in algorithm-based decision making poses a threat to the legitimacy of our political and legal system. The threat in question is relatively unique (due to its technological basis) and difficult to resist and accommodate. 1. What is 'algocracy'? Broadly speaking, to me 'algocracy' is the phenomenon whereby algorithms takeover public decision-making systems. More precisely, the term 'algocracy' can be used to describe decision-making systems in which computer-coded algorithms structure and constrain the way in which human beings interact with these decision-making processes (see, generally, Aneesh 2009). There are many different possible algocratic systems. I focus on algocratic systems made possible by the rise of big data, the internet of things, surveillance, data-mining and predictive analytics. 2. What is the 'threat of algocracy'? Public decision-making processes ought to be legitimate. Most people take this to mean that the processes should satisfy a number of proceduralist and instrumentalist conditions. In other words, the processes should be fair and transparent whilst at the same time achieving good outcomes. The problem with algocratic systems is that they tend to favour good outcomes over transparency and fairness. This is the threat they pose to political legitimacy. 3. Can we (or should we) resist the threat? I argue that it is difficult to resist the threat of algocracy (i.e. to dismantle or block the creation of algocratic systems) due to the ubiquity of the technology and the strength of the political and economic forces favouring the creation of algocratic systems. I also argue that, in many cases, it may not be morally desirable to dismantle or block the creation of such systems. 4. Can we accommodate the threat? I argue that it is difficult to accommodate the threat of algocracy (i.e. to allow for meaningful participation in and comprehension of these systems). I examine three possible accommodationist solutions and find them lacking in several respects. Also see: http://philosophicaldisquisitions.blogspot.com/2015/11/understanding-threat-of-algocracy.html Recorded on : 2016 06 01 16 11 25 Many thanks for watching! - Support me via Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/scifuture - Please Subscribe to this Channel: http://youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=TheRationalFuture - Science, Technology & the Future website: http://scifuture.org

DESCRIPTION:

John Danaher, Senior Lecturer in Law at the National University of Ireland (NUI) Galway: "Understanding Techno-Moral Revolutions" Talk held on August 24, 2021 for Colloquium of the Center for Humans and Machines at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development, Berlin It is common to use ethical norms and standards to critically evaluate and regulate the development and use of emerging technologies like AI and Robotics. Indeed, the past few years has seen something of an explosion of interest in the ethical scrutiny of technology. What this emerging field of machine ethics tends to overlook, however, is the potential to use the development of novel technologies to critically evaluate our existing ethical norms and standards. History teaches us that social morality (the set of moral beliefs and practices shared within a given society) changes over time. Technology has sometimes played a crucial role in facilitating these historical moral revolutions. How will it do so in the future? Can we provide any meaningful answers to this question? This talk will argue that we can and will outline several tools for thinking about the mechanics of technologically-mediated moral revolutions. About the Speaker:  John Danaher is a Senior Lecturer in Law at the National University of Ireland (NUI) Galway. He is the author of Automation and Utopia (Harvard 2019), co-author of A Citizen's Guide to AI (MIT Press 2021) and the coeditor of Robot Sex: Social and Ethical Implications (MIT Press 2017). His research focuses on the ethics and law of emerging technologies. He has published papers on the risks of advanced AI, the meaning of life and the future of work, the ethics of human enhancement, the intersection of law and neuroscience, the utility of brain-based lie detection, and the philosophy of religion. His work has appeared in The Guardian, Aeon, and The Philosophers’ Magazine. All upcoming and past seminars: https://www.mpib-berlin.mpg.de/chm/events

Data Will Get Linked Up In 2017, Experian's Danaher Says

DESCRIPTION:

MIAMI -- For a modern advertiser, it's a thorny problem. These days, your customers are reachable on all manner of different screens and devices that, whilst connected to the internet, are not connected to each other. It makes consumers schizophrenic. In other words, they have multiple identities, scattered across services. And that is a targeting nightmare. But many advertising technology vendors are now promising to solve the problem, and Experian sees the pain easing in the new year. "Linkage is the connection of customer data and partner data in order to identify a segment for use in targeted media - whether that is using name and address data, IP address data, cookie data, email addresses, mobile data, we can take all of those things and resolve them to an ID," says Experian TV partnerships director Brad Danaher, in this video interview with Beet.TV. "It is a key cog in the wheel that makes all of this go. It’s getting more advanced all the time. Marketers are getting much more savvy about the measurement they want around targeted TV." Experian began helping advertisers perform advanced TV targeting with Comcast back in 2007. Now it's leveraging its credit database and other datasets in combination with Neustar and mobile operators to link more datasets together, helping give marketers superpowers. "A lot of people don’t know all that can be done," Danager adds. "The word is getting out - they say], ‘Oh, I can link that to geolocation data so I can see that TV drove someone to a retail location’, which helps prove the value of TV, even if the sale didn’t occur. That’s something we can tell people now." This interview was conducted at Beet Retreat 2016: The Transformation of Television Advertising, an executive retreat presented by Videology with AT&T AdWorks and the 605. Please find more videos from the event here. This interview was conducted by Matter More Media CEO Tracey Scheppach.

By: Jake Voorhees https://www.youtube.com/jakevoorhees Anya Babbitt is the Founder and CEO of Splitting Fares, Inc. (“SPLT”), an enterprise ridesharing platform changing the way people commute together. Ms. Babbitt is a marketing and brand strategist dedicated to fresh insights, authentic messaging and measurable results in sustainability. An experienced entrepreneur, Anya has founded and grown three successful companies and exited one. Anya Babbitt is not your typical entrepreneur. Number one, she is a women in a tech start-up, number two, she is the CEO and number three she is working in an area (transportation) that is dominated by men. Anya, however, is not concerned about the gender inequality or the odds of success–she is laser focused on changing the way people meet and move in urban environments. As a German immigrant, her great grandfather achieved enough success in the United States that he was able to send his five sons to Princeton Prep School and consequently to Princeton University. As a result, Anya believes that the United States provides the best opportunities for innovation and entrepreneurship. She understands and appreciates the supportive environment that allows and encourages her to build and scale her world-changing venture. Anya hopes to inspire other women to pursue entrepreneurship and contribute to creating jobs and socially innovative ventures. Anya has guided SPLT from a small startup in NYC to being chosen for Techstars Mobility 2015 driven by Detroit. Her professional experience spans over 15 years working in the advertising, corporate communications, marketing, product design and sales sector primarily in Boston and New York City, including several years engaged in corporate brand development for multiple brands in domestic and worldwide locations. As a marketing entrepreneur, Anya has successfully provided marketing strategies to such notable institutions and luxury brands as WilmerHale (formerly Hale & Dorr), Trilogy Capital Partners, the Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF), Vicomte A., Hermes, Cartier, Bombardier, Fraser Yachts, L’Oreal, Maybach, the Vicente Fox Center of Studies, Library and Museum, Citizens Energy Corporation and the international and domestic Polo Clubs Association. She has led large teams of individuals working under tight deadlines and with large committed budgets. Her ability to plan ahead and execute under pressure allowed her to excel within the closely tied luxury goods market creating clients out of partnership opportunities. Throughout her career she has been engaged in testing the connection between purpose driven leadership and competitive bottom line performance. As a result, her teams have consistently outperformed peers in both growth and profitability. Since 2014, she has devoted her full attention to the emerging field of social and environmental sustainability, launching SPLT. Yale Zhang is a co-founder of Splitting Fares, Inc. Prior to entering the world of entrepreneurship, Yale’s background was in transportation and logistics, focusing on the warehousing and distribution of physical goods around the United States. In his capacity as Vice President of Wintao Global, they secured multi-year software development contracts with major transportation companies including Dynamex, Datatrac, Marc Global (now a subsidiary of RedPrairie). The insight into these transportation entities allowed Yale to leave and in 2007 start Clinical Guard, his first product distribution company, in medical supplies. The company has grown from an initial annual revenue of $400K to now $3M. Later, he started a medical device innovations company, Safe Heart USA, Inc, focused on creating vital signs monitoring hardware that works in coordination with smartphones running Android and iOS. As the CEO of Safe Heart, Yale has overseen the successful commercialization of research from Oxford University, Emory University, the successful raising of grants from the Atlantic Pediatric Device Consortium, and finally, in raising capital to initially fund a newly emerging business venture. Although Yale has achieved a certain level of success with his involvement in medical devices, his primary passion has always been transportation systems, specifically autonomous vehicles. Yale believes that ongoing technology research by many private and public companies will lead to car ownership reduction as vehicles become autonomous. When that happens, extraordinary opportunities arise for people to share vehicles. He joins SPLT with the intent to help change the behavior of people so that they are comfortable with sharing rides with other people so that everyone will be ready when the autonomous vehicle economy arrives.
