Battery makers’ interest in manganese is growing, said Eugene Lee, CFO of Giyani Metals. In June Lee spoke to Kitco at the Mining Investment Event of the North in Quebec City. Giyani Metals (CVE:EMM) is a battery metal development company focused on assets in the Kanye Basin, located in south-eastern Botswana, Africa. The company's flagship project is its K.Hill asset. The company's goal is to become a low-carbon producer of high-purity manganese sulphate monohydrate, which is used in some lithium-ion battery chemistries. The company is working towards a feasibility study, due in Q3 of this year, as well as building a demonstration plant. Battery chemistry for lithium-ion batteries is evolving due to trade-offs using different elements and technological advances. Lee said the chief characteristic provided by manganese is stability, preventing thermal runaway. "Companies seem to be moving towards manganese-rich formulations because it takes away some of the price volatility and sustainability issues that you have with cobalt and even with the nickel," said Lee, who notes that China accounts for 90% of global production, but he said that battery makers are seeking suppliers outside China. Lee said interest is growing. "What's changed for us is...being in a mineral that was less recognized. We sometimes had difficulties reaching out to potential off-takers. What's changed in the last six months is that instead of us having to cold call someone and try and connect, these organizations are now reaching out to us." Suzanne Angeli grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana. She received her Ph.D. in biomedical sciences from the University of California, San Francisco, where she studied how proteins misfold in neurodegenerative diseases. Presenter: Associate Professor Megan Maher Bio21 Molecular Science and Biotechnology Institute The University of Melbourne Metal ions are essential for all forms of life. In prokaryotes, ATP-binding cassette (ABC) permeases serve as the primary import pathway for many micronutrients including the first-row transition metal manganese. However, the structural features of ionic metal transporting ABC permeases have remained undefined. This presentation will describe the crystal structure of the manganese transporter PsaBC from Streptococcus pneumoniae in an open-inward conformation. The Type II transporter has a tightly closed transmembrane channel due to ‘extracellular gating’ residues that prevent water permeation or ion reflux. Below these residues, the channel contains a hitherto unreported metal coordination site, which is essential for manganese translocation. These structural features are highly conserved in metal-specific ABC transporters and are represented throughout the kingdoms of life. Collectively, our results define the structure of PsaBC and reveal the features required for divalent cation transport. About Associate Professor Megan Maher Megan Maher was awarded a PhD in Inorganic Chemistry from the University of Melbourne in 1998. She carried out postdoctoral research at the University of Sydney from 1998-2005, funded by a series of independent Fellowships from the Australian Synchrotron Research Program, the Australian Research Council and the University of Sydney. Between 2006-2007, she held the position of Team Leader in the Membrane Protein Crystallography Laboratory, headed by Professor So Iwata at Imperial College, London. In 2008 Megan returned to the Centenary Institute in Sydney, on a Career Development Fellowship funded by the Cancer Institute of NSW. Megan relocated to La Trobe University at the beginning of 2012 to take up a position as LIMS Senior Research Fellow. In 2015 she was appointed to the position of Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor in 2018. In 2017 Megan was awarded the Georgina Sweet Award for Women in Quantitative Biomedical Science and an ARC Future Fellowship in 2018. Megan joined the School of Chemistry and Bio21 institute at the University of Melbourne in 2019 as part of the University’s Driving Research Momentum (DRM) strategy. Megan’s current research focuses on investigating the role of trace metals in biological systems, with a particular focus on the structural biology of metalloproteins and integral membrane protein transporters. Pennsylvania’s history of mining has led to an acid mine drainage problem across the state, where streams suffer from high acidities and high dissolved metal concentrations. At acid mine drainage sites that contain high manganese, methods of remediation are challenged by the conditions necessary to remove manganese from the streamwater. However, once dissolved manganese is precipitated out as a manganese oxide, it is capable of pulling out a range of other contaminants. We investigate the promotion of manganese oxide precipitation for acid mine drainage remediation, and how to optimize manganese oxide properties for contaminant uptake.

The presentation by Prof Cairncross, will give a brief overview of the discovery, history and geology of the manganese field. The talk will then focus on selected minerals that have made the Kalahari manganese mines world-famous, and some of the type-species first discovered in the KMF. Bruce, having visited the mines on numerous occasions, will be showing underground and scenic photographs to supplement the featured mineral specimens.

On Friday, July 8, 2022, Tom Langton presented “An Illustrated Guide to Anglo-American Football History Before 1850.” Tom is the son of the accomplished British sports journalist and sports art and history aficionado Harry Langton (1929–2000) who established the world famous FIFA-Langton Collection, now owned by the National Football Museum Trust. Tom took over his family archives and company in 2013 as Langton Football Archives and has developed a new collection based on a range of traditional and modern themes that is used for exhibitions and displays. Tom is a biologist by profession and has particular interest in Football anthropology before 1800 and in Football Fine Art through the ages. Tom’s presentation shows evidence of ball games across America, Europe and Asia and reflects on their relevance to the origins of Association Football or Soccer. Links between Europe (Britain especially) and North America from the late medieval period until the early 19th century will be particularly investigated. The presentation is illustrated with images from the FIFA-Langton Collection and the Langton Football Archives collection and touches on the rules of Football games played before codification.

Yale Zhang is the founder of hardware start-up Safe Heart, which develops innovative wellness applications, hardware, and accessories. Their flagship product iOximeter is the first pulse oximeter to work on Android and iOS platforms, and a recent finalist on the Engadget Insert Coin competition. The iOximeter is a vital signs monitoring tool for smart phones. It is powered through the phone audio jack. Current features of the app include measurements of the oxygen saturation and heart rate, recording, and alarm functionality. Prior to entering the world of entrepreneurship, Yale’s background was in transportation and logistics, focusing on the warehousing and distribution of physical goods around the United States. In his capacity as Vice President of Wintao Global, they secured multi-year software development contracts with major transportation companies including Dynamex, Datatrac, Marc Global (now a subsidiary of RedPrairie). The insight into these transportation entities allowed Yale to leave and in 2007 start Clinical Guard, his first product distribution company, in medical supplies. The company has grown from an initial annual revenue of $400K to now $3M. Later, he started a medical device innovations company, Safe Heart USA, Inc, focused on creating vital signs monitoring hardware that works in coordination with smartphones running Android and iOS. As the CEO of Safe Heart, Yale has overseen the successful commercialization of research from Oxford University, Emory University, the successful raising of grants from the Atlantic Pediatric Device Consortium, and finally, in raising capital to initially fund a newly emerging business venture. Although Yale has achieved a certain level of success with his involvement in medical devices, his primary passion has always been transportation systems, specifically autonomous vehicles. Yale believes that ongoing technology research by many private and public companies will lead to car ownership reduction as vehicles become autonomous. When that happens, extraordinary opportunities arise for people to share vehicles. He joins SPLT with the intent to help change the behavior of people so that they are comfortable with sharing rides with other people so that everyone will be ready when the autonomous vehicle economy arrives.
