The PerformaBe series is designed to get close to no holds barred performance as possible with some value engineering built-in. Revel took most of the models we love in the Performa3 series and upped the game on driver materials and crossovers while giving even more cabinet finish options. For 2020, Revel added three models to the PerformaBe line. The F328Be takes the PerformaBe series to a new level with its large, floor-standing design. The one model that is especially intriguing is the new F226Be. We previewed this small floor stander at our 2019 Music Matters and it garnered a ton of positive comments from those who had a chance sit through the demos. With a full line up of 4 speakers, Revel rounded out the PerformaBe line with a new matching center channel, the C426Be. Beryllium tweeter technology is what adds the “Be” to the Performa designation. Beryllium is a rare earth metal that is known for being light, stiff, and very well damped. All of these are characteristics you want in a tweeter so Revel set out to design a Beryllium tweeter for the PerformaBe series. Using filter down technology from the Beryllium tweeter used in the Ultima series, they came up with a design for all of the PerformaBe models. To improve the midrange and bass drivers they developed a new ceramic cone material. They also coat the cast aluminum waveguide for the tweeter with a ceramic material. The F328Be even gets an even higher performing waveguide. We can’t wait to hear them when they release in early 2020. These materials result in quite the upgrade from the Performa models, What you get is far more high frequency extension, which gives them even more effortless high frequency reproduction. The ceramic bass drivers are more efficient in the Be series, giving them greater dynamics and deeper bass extension. PerformaBe also gives you 4 options of cabinet finish of black, white, metallic silver, and walnut. The M126Be is the one bookshelf speaker in the “Be” series. At $4000 a pair, they are not inexpensive but pack in a lot of high tech. When you couple them up with a nice front end, they can produce a huge soundstage with very respectable bass for a bookshelf speaker. The Beryllium tweeter is silky smooth and extended which makes them a great speaker for hearing lots of subtle details in the music. Our favorite model in the “Be” line is the new F226Be. Even though it is a floor-standing speaker, the dimensions make it almost disappear into a room. Its curved cabinet adds to its great appearance. It is a three-way design with the Beryllium tweeter complimented with a 5 ¼” ceramic composite aluminum midrange and two 6 ½” ceramic composite woofers. The cabinet is only about as wide as the woofers which helps the speaker disappear to your ears. These guys throw out a huge soundstage that belies their small size. The midrange, like the top end, is just exquisite. At $7000 a pair, they are not cheap, but they are going to rival the competition even as high as $15k per pair. Almost everyone who has heard them so far has been very impressed. And as with all Revels, the sound is just so neutral, you can listen to them for hours. The F228Be is a bigger version of the F226Be substituting the 6 ½’ dual woofers for dual 8” woofers. This gives the F228Be a more authoritative bottom end which will be especially beneficial in larger rooms. To our ears, the F226Be sounds almost identical to these except for the very deep bass, which makes the F226Be the best deal in our opinion. The F328Be will be coming in early 2020 with 3 of the 8” woofers in a much larger cabinet. It will also have an improved tweeter waveguide said to improve imaging and dispersion. We can’t wait to hear this new $16,000 a pair speaker. The C426Be rounds out the “Be” series with a very serious center channel. It has all the same drivers as the F226Be, but adds two more woofers for a total of 4, 6 ½” woofers. At $4500, it will perfectly match up with any of the “Be” models for a home theater. The PerformaBe series is what we feel the connoisseurs version of the Performa 3 models. What you will get is more refined, bigger, and more extended, in a cabinet that comes in high gloss black, white, walnut, and metallic silver. And even though the drivers are basically the same size as the Performa3, the tech improvements give you a much better soundstage presentation with that added “you are there” feel to the music. These are once again a great example of how Revel has taken what they learned in making the Ultima 2 series and putting it into a more affordable product.

There's a lot of talk about tweeters and what they are made of. PS speaker engineer Chris Brunhaver helps us understand what it all means.

Do you know what the best dome tweeter can do? Do you know what compression drivers can do? Food for thought about tweeter technology. We are so hell-bent nowdays on measurements. Yet, marketing only considers them when they are favorable to back up a certain product, or a certain technology. You shall see here a comparison of the mechanical distortion these two produce, and what distortion is introduced to the sound while comparing the two at the same SPL. The latest technology Beryllium dome tweeters have fantastic prowess to reach out very high in the frequency range, but they are so far behind the compression drivers in the ability to produce DISTORTION-FREE sound, that it brings tears to the eyes. Yet, for compression drivers the extension does not go beyond the human hearing range, so they will not provide the subtle 20+kHz signals that are the last bit of icing for realistic sound reproduction. On the other hand, the compression driver (Altec 288K) produces the mid-high frequency range with vanishingly low mechanical distortion, on the order of 100,000 lower than that of the dome tweeter technology. So, comparing the two: -Beryllium dome tweeter: best icing ever (the part you can't hear) -Compression driver: best cake ever (the part you hear) My personal motto: to have a great cake you need firstly a great cake, and if you can add icing to it, all the better. However, great icing but poor cake is still a second rate cake..... despite looking very showy, the first bite will tell you. That's how sound is, and we all have our preferences. No matter which you prefer (many prefer icing over the cake, there's nothing wrong with that), good luck on your audio journey! I hope this video helps to make you appreciate why the "other" camp is so enamored with their favorite high frequency driver, as often we see that beryllium tweeter and compression driver users form very strong opinions about what they use, and what others use. Here's why :) This is part of the A5 VOTT series, looking at the compression driver used in the A5. Currently there is little to no information on how to build cabinets for 515 and 288 series drivers. I'm stirring up the scene, and throwing this stone in the pond to rediscover these magnificent drivers, which are supposedly the finest high efficiency woofer and the finest compression driver ever made. I've built my speakers with 515C and 288H. I call them Voice of Lancelot (VOL). They do not follow any currently available cabinet concepts or designs, they are the result of my two decades long research and know-how passed on to me by one of the greatest minds of high end audio (Stu Ono), who broke down ever single speaker design and taught me how to improve on them. Sadly, he is gone, but his legacy shall continue. VOL includes a few groundbreaking concepts, the synthesis of the current cabinet design principles, backed by music instrument making principles, adapted for human auditory systems requirements and the actual room requirements (as opposed to designing for an-echoic chambers and optimizing for a select subset of convenient measurements rather than human hearing and those measurements which show up the hidden issues). This video series will start introducing these overarching concepts to help you get ideas to build your own design, and enrich your life with truly astounding musical instruments, which bring substance rather than an empty show. As the saying goes, once you go Altec, you can't go back.... the adage is true, a properly built Altec is what I (and many) think as the finest music reproduction instrument available in our age. (Others can do better shows for sure, but fail at tonal balance, often miserably.) In this first half of Part 1, Phil discusses some of the many uses of beryllium metal, alloys, and ceramics including why it is being used for the mirrors of the James Webb Space Telescope and in such places as nuclear reactors, the space shuttle, and the beam guide pipes of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. This section also discusses the minerals that contain beryllium, including beryl (such as emeralds, aquamarine, heliodor, morganite, and red beryl) and bertrandite, which is mined only in the Spor Mts. of western Utah. Current features of the app include measurements of the oxygen saturation and heart rate, recording, and alarm functionality. Presentation will go over the conception, research, development, and commercialization of the iOximeter product. Future functionality road map will be revealed. A Q&A session will be held afterwards. WCX TV sits down with Yale Zhang, Co-Founder of SPLT, to learn about the work that SPLT is doing regarding shared mobility.

Number one, she is a women in a tech start-up, number two, she is the CEO and number three she is working in an area (transportation) that is dominated by men. Anya, however, is not concerned about the gender inequality or the odds of success–she is laser focused on changing the way people meet and move in urban environments. As a German immigrant, her great grandfather achieved enough success in the United States that he was able to send his five sons to Princeton Prep School and consequently to Princeton University. As a result, Anya believes that the United States provides the best opportunities for innovation and entrepreneurship. She understands and appreciates the supportive environment that allows and encourages her to build and scale her world-changing venture. Anya hopes to inspire other women to pursue entrepreneurship and contribute to creating jobs and socially innovative ventures. Anya has guided SPLT from a small startup in NYC to being chosen for Techstars Mobility 2015 driven by Detroit. Her professional experience spans over 15 years working in the advertising, corporate communications, marketing, product design and sales sector primarily in Boston and New York City, including several years engaged in corporate brand development for multiple brands in domestic and worldwide locations. As a marketing entrepreneur, Anya has successfully provided marketing strategies to such notable institutions and luxury brands as WilmerHale (formerly Hale & Dorr), Trilogy Capital Partners, the Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF), Vicomte A., Hermes, Cartier, Bombardier, Fraser Yachts, L’Oreal, Maybach, the Vicente Fox Center of Studies, Library and Museum, Citizens Energy Corporation and the international and domestic Polo Clubs Association. She has led large teams of individuals working under tight deadlines and with large committed budgets. Her ability to plan ahead and execute under pressure allowed her to excel within the closely tied luxury goods market creating clients out of partnership opportunities. Throughout her career she has been engaged in testing the connection between purpose driven leadership and competitive bottom line performance. As a result, her teams have consistently outperformed peers in both growth and profitability. Since 2014, she has devoted her full attention to the emerging field of social and environmental sustainability, launching SPLT. Yale Zhang is a co-founder of Splitting Fares, Inc. Prior to entering the world of entrepreneurship, Yale’s background was in transportation and logistics, focusing on the warehousing and distribution of physical goods around the United States. In his capacity as Vice President of Wintao Global, they secured multi-year software development contracts with major transportation companies including Dynamex, Datatrac, Marc Global (now a subsidiary of RedPrairie). The insight into these transportation entities allowed Yale to leave and in 2007 start Clinical Guard, his first product distribution company, in medical supplies. The company has grown from an initial annual revenue of $400K to now $3M. Later, he started a medical device innovations company, Safe Heart USA, Inc, focused on creating vital signs monitoring hardware that works in coordination with smartphones running Android and iOS. As the CEO of Safe Heart, Yale has overseen the successful commercialization of research from Oxford University, Emory University, the successful raising of grants from the Atlantic Pediatric Device Consortium, and finally, in raising capital to initially fund a newly emerging business venture. Although Yale has achieved a certain level of success with his involvement in medical devices, his primary passion has always been transportation systems, specifically autonomous vehicles. Yale believes that ongoing technology research by many private and public companies will lead to car ownership reduction as vehicles become autonomous. When that happens, extraordinary opportunities arise for people to share vehicles. He joins SPLT with the intent to help change the behavior of people so that they are comfortable with sharing rides with other people so that everyone will be ready when the autonomous vehicle economy arrives.
