Over recent years, there has been a consumer-driven push towards a reduction in the application of chemical preservatives in foods and greater consumption of plant-based foods. This talk will explore ways whereby generally recognised as safe (GRAS) lactic acid bacteria (LAB) naturally present on raw foods can be harnessed for food safety and quality applications and also for the development of new fermented plant-based (nut) milk products. Mark is a Professor of Food Microbiology and Deputy Head of the School of Agriculture and Food Sciences at UQ. He leads a research team working on food fermentation, quality and safety with current funding from the ARC. His current research focus is in lactic acid bacteria physiology (stress signalling) and applications (plant-based dairy alternatives, cheese cultures, anti-fungal and anti-pathogen biocontrol). He teaches into food microbiology, food safety and food biotechnology courses at UQ and is a Fellow of the ASM and AIFST as well as a member of the editorial boards of mBio and Journal of Food Protection. Kevin Lane has a bachelor’s degree in Integrated Science and Business with emphasis in Operations Management and biochemistry. He worked for Briess Malt & Ingredients Co. before working for a chemical fermentation company producing food and beverage flavor and aroma products. He joined MillerCoors in 2009, where he ran the pilot brewery, both on the 40L as well as the 10 BBL system and was a member of their Global Taste Panel for three years. In late 2013, Kevin continued his career in the potable alcohol industries, working for Fermentis as the Technical Sales Manager of the USA & Canada and now as the Technical Sales Support Manager of the Americas. Kevin has been involved in all aspects of the Fermentis business in North America, working in the craft and industrial distilling markets, home and commercial wine and cider making, and in the home, craft and industrial brewing segments. The three towers making up Empire City will rise from a mountain-shaped podium that mimics Vietnam's rice paddy fields with terraced gardens. Housing apartments and a hotel, Empire 88 will house an elevated garden, and will also boast a public observation deck and top-floor events venue. Brisbane Square Tower 2 is also striving for a 6-star Green Star rating, with features that include a glazed façade, electric centrifugal chillers and lighting that switches off when areas are not in use. If built, it will be the fourth-tallest building in Brisbane.   26-, 10-STORY RESIDENTIAL TOWERS PITCHED IN BRISTOL Bouygues Group's development arm, Linkcity, is proposing to build 26- and 10-story towers containing 375 rental homes on the site of a former ambulance base in Bristol, U.K., Building Design reports. A castle wall once stood on the site, and architect Chapman Taylor stated the development's "strong form" boasts a northern boundary reminiscent of that wall. The towers would be linked by a podium containing a convenience store and leisure facilities. If built, Castle Park View's tallest tower could stand up to 64 stories. Our keynote speaker is Davie Philip - a Scottish activist who's been advocating for sustainable community in Ireland for over 20 years. Yale Zhang is the founder of hardware start-up Safe Heart, which develops innovative wellness applications, hardware, and accessories. Their flagship product iOximeter is the first pulse oximeter to work on Android and iOS platforms, and a recent finalist on the Engadget Insert Coin competition. The iOximeter is a vital signs monitoring tool for smart phones. It is powered through the phone audio jack. Current features of the app include measurements of the oxygen saturation and heart rate, recording, and alarm functionality. Presentation will go over the conception, research, development, and commercialization of the iOximeter product. Future functionality road map will be revealed. A Q&A session will be held afterwards. The presentation will conclude with a live demo and a device giveaway.

The insight into these transportation entities allowed Yale to leave and in 2007 start Clinical Guard, his first product distribution company, in medical supplies. The company has grown from an initial annual revenue of $400K to now $3M. Later, he started a medical device innovations company, Safe Heart USA, Inc, focused on creating vital signs monitoring hardware that works in coordination with smartphones running Android and iOS. As the CEO of Safe Heart, Yale has overseen the successful commercialization of research from Oxford University, Emory University, the successful raising of grants from the Atlantic Pediatric Device Consortium, and finally, in raising capital to initially fund a newly emerging business venture. Although Yale has achieved a certain level of success with his involvement in medical devices, his primary passion has always been transportation systems, specifically autonomous vehicles. Yale believes that ongoing technology research by many private and public companies will lead to car ownership reduction as vehicles become autonomous. When that happens, extraordinary opportunities arise for people to share vehicles. He joins SPLT with the intent to help change the behavior of people so that they are comfortable with sharing rides with other people so that everyone will be ready when the autonomous vehicle economy arrives.
