Originally presented on Thursday, April 16th, 2020 Introduction by: Scott Ketcham, Director, OSHA Directorate of Construction Panel Presenters: Thomas Shanahan, CAE, VP Enterprise Risk Management and Executive Education, National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) Harry Dietz, Director, Enterprise Risk Management, NRCA Rich Trewyn, Director, Enterprise Risk Management, NRCA Falls are the leading cause of death in construction, but roofers are at an even greater risk of falling than those in other trades. In 2017, roofers experienced 35.9 deaths per 100,000 FTEs, more than 10 times the rate of all construction occupations combined. The OSHA-NIOSH-CPWR National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls and the National Roofing Contractors Association are working to improve these numbers by increasing employer and worker awareness and understanding of fall hazards and how to address them. The Safety Stand-Down has been postponed until later in the summer due to COVID-19, but that doesn’t mean we should stop focusing on falls. This hour-long webinar provides the perfect opportunity to learn from experts virtually about some of the specific considerations roofing contractors and workers need to take into account when planning, training, and executing fall prevention measures, as well as what to do in the event that a fall does occur on your jobsite.

Georgia-Pacific Balances Emotion, Functionality In Marketing Mix

ORLANDO, Florida - In this purpose-driven marketing age, it’s only natural to sell toilet paper without showing or even talking about it. Instead, simply focus on things like grandparents, single moms and step parents. This is the path taken by Georgia-Pacific as part of its overall effort to portray women more accurately, according to CMO Douwe Bergsma. “It translated into how we did our media planning and that we aligned ourselves with partners and publishers and media content that portrayed women accurately and that was more family friendly,” Bergsman explains in an interview with Beet.TV at the annual Masters of Marketing conference of the Association of National Advertisers. As AgencySpy reports, Georgia-Pacific via the Deutsch agency decided to take a different approach not only to selling paper products but metering out emotion at the right times and in the right places. “Angel Soft started off with campaign where we highlighted and celebrated the challenges that single moms have,” Bergsma says. “Another video series for Angel Soft was about the challenges that step parents have with children that do not automatically love you back.” Whereas G-P traditionally had been very functionally driven about promoting products like Dixie accessories, “We switched to recommending and inspiring people to be more here while they are at dinner. Put away their phones and connect with your mom and connect with your daughter,” says Bergsma. The marketer’s media mix still consists in large part of traditional TV and video and has become “a little bit more emotional” in its online content compared with TV, according to Bergsma. “So what you see for Angel Soft on TV is different from what you see for Angel Soft in the social media space,” he says. When it comes to in-store shopper marketing, G-P’s messaging is more functional than on TV for example. “So it’s kind of the closer you get to the point of purchase the more functional we get. The farther away we are from the point of purchase, the more emotional we are,” Bergsma says. We interviewed him at the ANA Masters of Marketing annual meeting in Orlando. Georgia-Pacific, located in the industrial corridor of West Eugene, is responsible for contributing to the ever-increasing rate of toxic exposure to air and water contaminants in West Eugene. The air quality in the Eugene-Springfield area is among the worst in the Pacific Northwest, and direct exposure to these contaminants is compounded for low-income and minority residents of that region. Centro-Latino Americano & Oregon Toxics Alliance has created a detailed report on the disproportionate exposure these communities experience. [ The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) is a front group that permits corporations to control politics through the creation of 'model' bills, pushed through with the assistance of state legislators. Corporations and legislators (primarily Republican) are also members of ALEC, and receive innumerable benefits from this arrangement. ALEC submits over 1,000 of these bills per year, 1 of 5 of which are enacted as law. Through this process, the American public is led to believe that the democratic process prevails, while corporations pass laws that destroy the environment, human rights, and economic stability. Georgia-Pacific, owned by the Koch Brothers, is an ALEC corporation, and uses this membership to influence the legislative process to enable their destruction of the environment and the poisoning of the communities where their factories reside. Koch Industries has operations in 45 states and 60 countries. They are the second largest private company in the United States, and have considerable influence over politics, contributing $5.2 million to state elections since 2003, and over $100 million to right-wing think tanks and advocacy groups since the late 1990s. Cascadia Action Lab believes that it is unacceptable to permit the continued poisoning of our community through unethical pawns known as legislators who manipulate political process to support expansion and profit for the 1%. We chose to utilize radical street theater to model the dangers of carcinogenic, poisoning chemicals by performing a chemical spill skit in front of the Georgia-Pacific facility in West Eugene, 2665 Highway 99 North, Eugene, Oregon. We believe that without direct action, these corporations will continue, with the support and funding of ALEC and other front groups, to poison and devastate our community and our environment. (“SPLT”), an enterprise ridesharing platform changing the way people commute together. Ms. Babbitt is a marketing and brand strategist dedicated to fresh insights, authentic messaging and measurable results in sustainability. An experienced entrepreneur, Anya has founded and grown three successful companies and exited one. Anya Babbitt is not your typical entrepreneur. Number one, she is a women in a tech start-up, number two, she is the CEO and number three she is working in an area (transportation) that is dominated by men. Anya, however, is not concerned about the gender inequality or the odds of success–she is laser focused on changing the way people meet and move in urban environments. As a German immigrant, her great grandfather achieved enough success in the United States that he was able to send his five sons to Princeton Prep School and consequently to Princeton University. As a result, Anya believes that the United States provides the best opportunities for innovation and entrepreneurship. She understands and appreciates the supportive environment that allows and encourages her to build and scale her world-changing venture. Anya hopes to inspire other women to pursue entrepreneurship and contribute to creating jobs and socially innovative ventures. Anya has guided SPLT from a small startup in NYC to being chosen for Techstars Mobility 2015 driven by Detroit. Her professional experience spans over 15 years working in the advertising, corporate communications, marketing, product design and sales sector primarily in Boston and New York City, including several years engaged in corporate brand development for multiple brands in domestic and worldwide locations. As a marketing entrepreneur, Anya has successfully provided marketing strategies to such notable institutions and luxury brands as WilmerHale (formerly Hale & Dorr), Trilogy Capital Partners, the Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF), Vicomte A., Hermes, Cartier, Bombardier, Fraser Yachts, L’Oreal, Maybach, the Vicente Fox Center of Studies, Library and Museum, Citizens Energy Corporation and the international and domestic Polo Clubs Association. She has led large teams of individuals working under tight deadlines and with large committed budgets. Her ability to plan ahead and execute under pressure allowed her to excel within the closely tied luxury goods market creating clients out of partnership opportunities. Throughout her career she has been engaged in testing the connection between purpose driven leadership and competitive bottom line performance. As a result, her teams have consistently outperformed peers in both growth and profitability. Since 2014, she has devoted her full attention to the emerging field of social and environmental sustainability, launching SPLT. Yale Zhang is a co-founder of Splitting Fares, Inc. Prior to entering the world of entrepreneurship, Yale’s background was in transportation and logistics, focusing on the warehousing and distribution of physical goods around the United States. In his capacity as Vice President of Wintao Global, they secured multi-year software development contracts with major transportation companies including Dynamex, Datatrac, Marc Global (now a subsidiary of RedPrairie). The insight into these transportation entities allowed Yale to leave and in 2007 start Clinical Guard, his first product distribution company, in medical supplies. The company has grown from an initial annual revenue of $400K to now $3M. Later, he started a medical device innovations company, Safe Heart USA, Inc, focused on creating vital signs monitoring hardware that works in coordination with smartphones running Android and iOS. As the CEO of Safe Heart, Yale has overseen the successful commercialization of research from Oxford University, Emory University, the successful raising of grants from the Atlantic Pediatric Device Consortium, and finally, in raising capital to initially fund a newly emerging business venture. Although Yale has achieved a certain level of success with his involvement in medical devices, his primary passion has always been transportation systems, specifically autonomous vehicles. Yale believes that ongoing technology research by many private and public companies will lead to car ownership reduction as vehicles become autonomous. When that happens, extraordinary opportunities arise for people to share vehicles. He joins SPLT with the intent to help change the behavior of people so that they are comfortable with sharing rides with other people so that everyone will be ready when the autonomous vehicle economy arrives.
